Shivering Sands was built during the Second World War as one of a chain of
maritime forts to defend London and the Thames estuary. These photos, from Chris Warren's
collection, date from 1942 and show the forts being constructed in Gravesend. The central
picture shows the completed fort, with the anti-aircraft guns in place on the roofs of
the towers.
