The construction of Shivering Sands

Shivering Sands was built during the Second World War as one of a chain of maritime forts to defend London and the Thames estuary. These photos, from Chris Warren's collection, date from 1942 and show the forts being constructed in Gravesend. The completed fort consisted of a group of seven connected towers with the anti-aircraft guns and a searchlight mounted on their roofs, as seen in the left photo on the second row.
