* Ian noted that there were two versions of ‘The Eggplant That Ate Chicago’ on the chart. The version by Spencer's Washboard Kings was at number 22. Unfortunately he didn't catch the name of the artist responsible for the version at number 11. The American hit was by Dr. West's Medicine Show & Junk Band so it is likely that this is the version they played but Radio City also playlisted a version by Prof. Ernest Node & his Mug and Jug Band. We asked if anyone could remember which was used on Radio 270 and we heard back from DJ David Sinclair: “I feel certain we played the Dr. West version. I can't offer concrete evidence, just a gut folk-memory.” His colleague Guy Hamilton agrees: “Radio 270 definitely played the version of ‘The Eggplant That Ate Chicago’ by Dr. West's Medicine Show & Junk Band - I remember doing it!”.

** Ian noted this song as being “First Friend” By Diana Wallace but we haven't been able to trace a release of that title or by that artist. Thanks to correspondent Gareth Jones for suggesting that the single is actually “Best Friend” by Dana Rollin which was issued on the Stateside label in January 1967. It was a cover version of a Lovin' Spoonful album track.

Many thanks to Ian Kellock for sharing this chart.
