Radio Caroline Top 50,
30th May 1964

This chart was noted down by listener Ate Harsta and passed to The Pirate Radio Hall of Fame by Hans Knot. Our grateful thanks to both of them.

In the early days of Radio Caroline, the Top 50 was broadcast in The Big Line Up programme between 4 and 6pm each Saturday. Later, after the merger with Radio Atlanta, the countdown was moved earlier, going out between 2 and 4pm, still on Saturdays. It wasn't possible to play all fifty records in a 2 hour programme so the DJ would omit some. As a result there are gaps in Ate's notes.

Tom Lodge told us (see here) that the Caroline chart at that time was very much based on the one published in Melody Maker magazine. In fact the chart was so close to the one in Melody Maker that we have been able to made educated guesses as to what records fill the gaps left by Ate. They are marked mm. If you spot any mistakes, or can confirm the positions, please get in touch.

We have has put together a Spotify playlist of this Top 50 chart. You can find it here. The Rolling Stones EP is represented by one of the tracks from it, You Better Move On. We hope it brings back good memories.
